Whats a good 1 GB Video Card?

ok I'm not a very big pc gamer but want something that can give me good frame rate with Flight Simulator X. I own a Gateway GT5676. Plenty of RAM and hard drive space. It came with a 256mb ATI Radeon HD3200 video card. looking to upgrade.

Best buy is selling 4 different 1 GB video cards....

NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 $599.99

NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT $149.99

ATI RADEON HD3650 OC $99.99

NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT $199.99

The only big difference is the clock speed....400MHz to 800MHz. What should I get? (Bang for the buck)...8500GT?? please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!|||the 9800 GX2 will have the most performance (3-4 times the other cards)

but you don't just video card performance by the amount of video ram they have, the core clock and memory bandwidth ans speed are far more important|||before you go to best buy and put down $500 have a look at

http://www.tigerdirect.com

they offer more and are cheaper

when you get a card that large there are other things that you might need to upgrade also

the card i use is a evga GeForce 8800 ultra

EQ2 & Half Life2 are the type games i play|||Well you shouldn't get any of those because they're ridiculously overpriced. I would recommend something like a 9600GT, but if you don't care about price, the 9800. You should buy online, maybe from Newegg.

Can my Computer/Motherboard run a video card?

Hello, I'm hoping someone can asst me with this:

(1 - My computer is a HP, I can upgrade it up to 4GB of RAM which is needed to play games at a fast rate such as The Sims 2 (and expansions), Civilization 4, Age of Empires 3, etc,.

I'm not looking to upgrade my PC to a powerhouse, but am wanting to get the most out of it and start playing those good games out there.

(2. Video/Graphic Card:

I understand the difference between the models, and the brand.

I have been researching for some time now and have looked into a nVida GeForce 8800 GT or a 9600.

Now, my question isn't that which one of these cards should I pick; its Will either of these run on my computer/motherboard handle it and not make me waste my money? :(

Information on my motherboard provided by CPU something or other..:

Model: 08FCh (DO1)

Chipset: Intel

Other information about my computer:

OS: Windows XP Pro

RAM: 256 MB (It is able to be upgraded to 4GB which I will once I buy a video card)

Direct X is 9.0c

Again, the video cards I had my eye on was:

GeForce 9600GT

Link for 9600GT:http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=01G-P3-N869-AR

And the other was a 8800 GT which is a popular Video card that most people have luck with and runs well for its price?

If you need any other information, I'll add it.

Thank you for your valuable time,

Union of Life|||You didn't tell us anything about your motherboard.

What kind of motherboard is it? What kind of chipset is on the motherboard?

More what kind of graphics do you have now? Are the built onto the Motherboard? Or did you have another card?

You probably need to go to HP's site to figure that out.

4gb of RAM does help some in games, but a Graphic card helps WAY MORE in games then RAM does. The other thing is, Windows 32 bit can't support full 4gb of RAM! Meaning with your version of windows xp, you well only get something like 3.2gb of use!

No program now days NEEDS 4gb of RAM! 2GB is good even for vista. The only reason you need a lot of ram is if you are doing a lot of things at the same TIME!

Get 2gb of RAM and use the extra money on your graphic card.

Post what type of HP Computer you have, and then maybe somebody else can figure out the chip set. |||I'm guessing that is a:

HP Compaq dx2000 Microtower

250 Watt Power Supply

No AGP or PCI-Express Interface for Graphics Card

This means you can use a regular PCI graphics card, not 9600GT or 8800GT.

What would you guys go with as your video card setup if you had...?

I need to read up more on SLI video cards, but im currently running 2 nvdia 460 GTXs in SLI but idk how to activate sli, or if windows does it automatically now. I was honestly hoping for a lot more power from my computer but im gonna have to figure out what is holding my computer back the most.

Anyways someone told me that i could somehow increase my frame rate in 3D games if i disable my SLI config. I noticed in almost any game i ran in 3D that the fps would drop by 50% when in 3D.

I was always told that 2 cheaper SLI video cards would run better than a more expensive video card on its own. Ive always had nvidia cards and hear they are the best route.

Anyways my question basically is asking what you would do, SLI or one really nice video card?

Also do you guys think 2 460 GTXs should run any video game perfectly fine in 3D?

Im running 16 gigs of DDR3 on an intel core i7 and am almost always running multiple instances of games, otherwise ive got 20-60 tabs of firefox open while streaming music while playing a game.

Thanks for your time.|||Check your Motherboard specs, if the specs for the motherboard say like PCIE 2.0 x16 (x4) or something that probably means that it isn't running the other graphics card or not at a very efficient rate. The problem could be there. The 460 wasn't a GREAT graphics card either but if you have two then you could be running at x8/x8 which COULD make things not QUITE as fast as you want it. Also what i7? the range of i7 products are quite a bit.

And if you are running that much stuff then I would assume the problem would be in your processor being overloaded.

Find that widget that allows you to see what CPU % you are using up. If it is 100 constantly. then that is your problem more so than the SLI cards.

Also 16 gigs of ram???? Lol prob your processor bottlenecking it|||Just a tip for ya zero, running multiple games is not called stupidity, its called multi tasking and can get you very far when it comes to MMOs or any game you can farm stuff afk in. For example i used to run 2+ instances of star wars galaxies at a time to be able to kill anything without worry.

|||Oh also shouldve mentioned i got 12 gigs of ddr3 not 16, i was gonna go with 6 gigs and then wanted 8 or 10 and wound up saving by just buying 2 orders of the ram which amounted to 12 total gigs.

|||Not sure if serious.....

SLI is activated through drivers. Go toy the nvidia control panel and tick the relevant box to run them in SLI.

2x460s are as powerful as a GTX570, so yes, two cheap video cards are really better than one more expensive.

Frame rates are expected to drop by 50% in 3D mode, because every frame is rendered twice. If you are running with upto date drivers, SLI should't be an issue.

2 460's can not automatically run any game in 3D perfectly. You will need a more expensive setup for that, perhaps 2x 560Ti's.

Running multiple games at once is called stupidity.

Is this the right Video Card to buy?

Considering the fact that my Computers Motherboard has only Regular PCI Interface connections, its hard to find the right type of video card to buy and work for games that I want to play, such as:

The Sims 2; Civilization 4; Age of Empires 3 and among others and their expansions.

Here's what I narrowed down my search to:

A GeForce 8400 GS with 512MB of Video Memory.

Can someone help me out with this?

And someone who has actually USED this card with The Sims 2, Civ 4, etc,. on medium settings? (I'm not asking for a powerhouse PCI video card, but its the only thing I got to work with)

How are the Frame Rates? Visuals? I heard that 5100 or something had better frame rates. Is this true?

And, if it is, can you direct me to a better regular PCI Video Card that would run the basic games I want with no noticeable lag?

Thank you,

Union

P.S. Link to the 8400 GS http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0298083|||If your mobo has a PCI-E slot then you can use it.

However, it won't run many games well beyond low settings. The Sims 2 and Civ 4 are relatively light and should be manageable on this card.

By the way, a "5100" does not exist for ATI nor Nvidia that is in the range of this 8400GS (which is a low-end card).

You won't run games suhc as CoD or Crysis though.

Good luck!|||www.systemrequirementslab.com Will scan your pc, and then you pick a game from the list, it will tell you if you can play it or not. If you can't it will direct you to some products that will help you.|||it's a good card it will be able to play all of the games that u are saying i say go for it great price and great proformence but before u order make sure that your power supply is 300 watt and that the card acualy works.|||I don't think this card would work, if it were to it wouldn't work very well.

I would suggest upgrading your motherboard or just getting a new computer to fix these problems. B/C if all you have is PCI that must be a pretty old Comp.

http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3478852&CatId=1558|||You should have told us your PC configuration ,I mean...the processor and the actual motherboard model.

Anyway....that video card is outdated ,I know it belongs to the famous GeForce 8 series but it isn't powerful enough for today's standards.

The guys from CompUSA don't specify it but the 8400 is a 64-bit memory interface which means the whole lot of 512MB of memory will be transfered via 64-bit :8MBs/bit is a very slow transfer.

Because you didn't specify the budget you're disposed to spend on a new video card I'm going to recommend you something that's no more than $50 first.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

If you aren't budget limited at $50 then I would go with either

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

The last one is the one i would recommend ifyou can afford it because it's a 4870,and t's got 256bit interface.

I fyou don't want to go that high with the budget ...to spend that much then the 4850 512/256 will do the job very well ...just don't spend the money on a GeForce 8400GS because there's actually no reason to buy it...it's outdated.

I would rate the 8400 the way I want to ,from my viewpoint it's worth 5/10 ,but again...this is just for you to see it ...I wouldn't have rated the card because it isn't worth it....too slow.|||8400GS is not worth that much. This deal is much better:

What is wrong with my video card?

OK i asked this before but people wanted more info. I run a scanner that tells me whether or not a game can run on my computer or not. I tried it on a game called Global Agenda which has requirements of a 256mb video ram or better with Shader Model 3.0+ (GeForce 8 series or higher/Radeon HD3000 series or higher). I have a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. HOWEVER: when the scanner indicates the 4 major catergories it says this : i need 256 mb of ram, i have 1.3gb, i need 3d, which i have, i need T&L, which i also have, i need pixel shader 3.0, i have 4.0, and i need vertex shader 3.0 and i have 4.0. i pass all of the tests for minimum requirements and reccomended requirements for my video card which is my problem. I have windows 7, which includes a general hardware rating on video card, ram, etc. My video card WAS rated 4.6 when i first got it, n ow its down to 2.6. IDK what this means, but i dont like it and now i have 2 questions: 1st and most importantly, WHY WONT THIS GAME WORK RIGHT? and 2nd, why did my video card rating go down and how do i fix it if possible? Any help on these topics is much appreciated. Also, please dont ask for more info unless you have a specific thing you need to know!|||Update your drivers.

Interface is something to consider. AGP is better than PCI, but PCI-Express is even better if you have a card which supports it well. PCI-Express is about like an interstate highway - only faster if you have a decent enough vehicle. A bicycle won't make better time on the interstate. So a faster interface won't help unless you have a decent enough GPU to really take advantage of that.|||I think the pixel shaders and mb-s

I put an Nvidia 8600 EN (made by Asus) two years ago, and it runs well - but struggles a bit with hignest settings on Crysis - though generally runs the game very nicely with optimised settings (great video, but not maximum settings). At the price (about $150 at the time I bought that one) I wouldn't say it's worth spending much more - about $150 will put you into a very nice bracket. I'm very glad I didn't spend less.

why is it i'm seeing "out of range" when i start to play a game like warcraft or age of empire 3? I'm using 256MB RAM now, but when i was using 32MB RAM it was fine.

Will a bad power supply cause the video card to give frequency out of range errors?

My original 500 watt power supply died on me 2 months ago. Money has been real tight for me, so I have been unable to buy a new power supply, but instead I am using a old 300 watt power supply.

When playing games like Spore, or World of Warcraft, after a period of time ranging anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour one of 4 things happens.

-The most common problem: The screen turns black and it says "Frequency out of range." I can still hear sound in the background, but usually after a couple of seconds sound stops and I assume the computer freezes.

-The computer instantly freezes screen included.

-Out of no where my entire monitor turns into grey lines and the computer freezes.

The computer downright turns itself off and I cannot turn it back on unless I unplug the power supply and turn it off and on that way.

I have gone into /run dxdiag and forced my refresh rate to match my monitors.

Somewhere, something is not right as far as the heating goes. I have had to take the side off and literally keep a house fan next to my computer or else it will give me frequency out of ranger errors just from browsing the web. Also suffice it to say, playing games with the side on causes the problems when I game to occur almost instantly. My computer is normally cooled with 5 fans when the side is on, I cant see a heating issue. But atm, even with all of that something is giving me a heating problem so I HAVE to keep a house fan next to it.

When all of these problems happen, my video card is cool to the touch. Processor feels warm but nothing out of the ordinary.

I did discover that the fan on my rather weak temporary 300 watt power supply is no longer working. So I am sure that's causing some sort of heating problem. But I am trying to figure out if I am ALSO having video card problems, or if its just solely one or the other. Because alot of these problems based on the research I'be done online, say my video card is going bad.

My Video Card: VisionTek RADEON X1950 Pro XGE (agp) in case anyone wants to know. And I also downloaded speed fan and my processor temps are fine.

Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks. =D

(you need the exact make and model)

Step 2) Find out what motherboard you have.

Step 3) Decide how much money you are willing to spend.

Step 4) Call a hardware store and tell them what motherboard you have and how much money you are willing to spend and ask them what video cards they suggest.

If you know a bit about the compatability of your computer you can just look up videocards on this list and pick one yourself:

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_e…

Start at the top of the list and work down until you find one you can afford.

Step 5) Look up the G3D rating for the new video card, use the link from step 1 or step 4. Make sure the rating is much higher.

Step 6) If everything is good so far, Do a quick google search on the videocard name and read some things people say about it. Make sure there arent any annoying problems with that model. In your case I would google the videocard name and "wow" together.

---

If the video card passes all those things buy that video card.

If it fails, go back to step 3 (yep I do mean step 3).

hope that helps , good see|||stick to the nvidia. they are the best cards u can find in the market. just increase the dedicated memory... if u have 256 mb increase it to 512 mb and if u have 512 increase it to 1 gb. also the ram plays an important role so try to upgrade it as well.|||It might be your internet that is the problem or the server your on but if its just the graphic card stick to nvidia and get a better video card, if its 512 mb it is likely you need a better one

When You Upgrade Your Computer's Video Card What does it do?

Does it increase FPS rate when playing games?

Make a better Picture?

Or both?|||yes to both and also if your current video card is too low for the program you are using it may be using some processor speed to make up for the lack of video memory so getting a new card would also speed up your computer significantly.|||No, when you put in a better card, it makes your computer slower and gives it less capabilities. essentially, your are paying to make your computer worse. terrible investment|||It makes your graphics processing better. Allowing you to pwn noobs much better and faster than ever before.|||Yes all of the above

Graphics card/video card?

i have a vista home basic computer and its performance rating is 1.0

cannot run windows Movie maker or screen saver and my computer is very slow.

do i need to buy a graphics cards or a video card or both

and how do i speed up my computer|||As long as its a computer and not a laptop you can upgrade your graphics card

However now days there are certain limitations as to which card you can install, so if you could tell us what Make and Model your computer is we can advise you which card suits your computer best

[UPDATE]

Hi again theres a few medions with a Intel Celeron D processor, do you know which number medion it is.. example Medion 6409

Basically we need to know which slot ( AGP, PCI or PCI-express ) the medion has so we can point you in the direction of a good graphics card

However you can look at graphics cards here

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Component…

You can try using CPUID, which once downloaded you simply click Mainboard tab and check what the Graphical Interface is (AGP/PCI express) then you can pick the proper graphics card for your computer

http://www.cpuid.com/

:D

PS Graphics card - Video card = same thing|||Yes. Upgrading your video card would help a lot.|||you probably just need to downgrade to Windows XP if your performance rating is that low, you will get much more out of an old computer with XP than you will with vista|||Change your desktop theme to Windows Classic, that should reduce some overhead. Also, turn off the search facilities. It's always a good idea to uninstall any software you're not using. Which Antivirus product are you using?|||Without knowing more about your computer it's impossible to say what the best upgrade path would be.

A video card and graphics card are just different names for the same thing. Getting one will increase the performance of graphics on the PC but not overall performance.

If you computer is generally very slow, then it's very likely you need more RAM. Getting more RAM will probably provide a bigger boost than a graphics card but it's hard to say without knowing your current PC specs.|||performance rating is 1.0

sounds impossible. my laptop is 5.0

Throw it in the bin.|||upgrade your processor to a Pentium D, upgrade the amount of RAM and also upgrade your graphic card.|||You should downgrade to windows xp sp2. Windows vista eats a lot of your computer's memory and just waste it on making its user interface look good. WinXp is much better. And most importantly, upgrade your ram to as much as you can afford and up to how much your motherboard can support. You should post your pc's complete specs so we can help you more.

Upgrading video card with PCI or PCI Express?

Hi--

I've got a slightly older computer I'm upgrading. Bottom line, will a video card rated as PCI Express 2.0 work in a plain PCI E slot? [I know it won't even fit in a regular PCI slot].|||yes, PCI-e 2.0 is backward compatible with PCI-e 1.0/1.1|||Yes. PCI-e 2.0 is compatible with 1.0 in all combinations. Every PCI-e 2.0 /x16 card is also a PCI-e 1.0 x16 card because it fully complies with the PCI-e 1.0 x16 specification.

Can my video card run Sims 3?

My video card specs:

Fill Rate:

Triangles per Second:

Memory Bandwidth:

Maximum Memory:

1.1 Billion Texels/Sec.

34 Million

8.0GB/Sec.

64MB

Requirements :

128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

Can it run it?|||The minimum system requirements state you will need a minimum of 128MB of memory on your graphics card, since you only have 64MB, I'd suspect it will not run so well.

If you own a desktop PC, Graphics cards with 128MB memory are fairly cheap, so I'd recommend looking at purchasing a new one. If you have a laptop, there is not much you can do in regards to upgrades.|||your video card is 64MBs... Sims 3 requires 128MBs... so no.|||Your video card is 64mb while the requirements is 128mb.

It doesn't matter how fast your Video card is clocked, you still need enough dedicated memory.|||go on this website and try it out.

i use it for games all the time to see if they will run well or horrible.

What video card will perform well with 300 watts?

I need a video card that is able to connect to an HDTV and that will work with 300 watts. I'm not a hard core gamer, my most modern PC game is Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. However, I plan on purchasing Half-Life 2, Oblivion, and Tomb Raider: Anniversary very soon. I would like a video card that runs some of the more recent games at decent frame rates. I was thinking of a video card in the geforce 6 and 7 series. Here are my specs:

Pentium 4 3GHz, 1GB of Ram

PCI Express x16 Expansion slot (right now I use integrated graphics)

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, and 300-watt Power supply.|||i would highly suggest you upgrade your power supply. 450 watts is roughly the bare minimum if you want a stable and decent gaming computer. Cards that can run Oblivion at decent frame rates and at low-medium settings need at least 450 watts.

check the link below to choose the best card for your budget.

once you have a card in mind, do research on its power requirements especially on the Amperage rating. Check your power supply if it meets the requirement (which i think it wont) if not then you need to purchase a new power supply that meets your video card requirement.|||Well if u want u could get a GForce 7800 which can run most if not all games well and u should get like 1 more gb of ram just to be safe.

You think its safe to buy a used video card through amazon?

guy has 96% rating and offers 30 day warranty its a very good deal on a used video card should i go for it?|||Thats a decent rating.

I would say do it if is an excellent price, much less than a new one of the same model. The only thing the seller can guarantee you is that it works right now, while the manufacturer will offer you a much longer year + warranty.

Which power supply would go good with this video card upgrade....?

This is the video card that I am looking to buy.....XFX GT240XZNFC GeForce GT 240 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Retail its listed on newegg.com for 104.99

This is the computer i have.......eMachines ET1331G-03W with the specs listed on walmart.com

eMachines ET1331G-03W Desktop PC:

* 2.7GHz AMD Athlon II X2 dual-core processor powers through productivity tasks with ease

NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics deliver best-in-class performance and crisp, vibrant video

* 6GB DDR2 dual channel system memory, expandable to 8GB

Allows you to coast through multiple rigorous applications while watching a movie on your PC all at the same time

* 750GB SATA hard drive rated at 7200 rpm

I am pretty sure that this computer will take that video card no problem as i seen on another forum that my computer has a pci express 2.0 x16 slot on it. So which power supply from newegg would work with this setup?|||That GT 240 card has a 350W minimum power supply rating - and your cpu isn't very power hungry. Using the rule of thumb to have at least 100W cushion, any 450W or higher power supply would be reasonable.

This $30 one is well rated (460W)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…|||A PSU of 500W would probably work but if you are still going to buy one, I would suggest to buy a 600W PSU to avoid any problems.|||Smart guy - he knows he needs a bigger PS!

OK - I buy all my hardware at www.newegg.com

This link:

http://www.newegg.com/Store/ComboDeals.a…

is a section of there store that sells "married pairs" of power supply's and video cards... This is probably the biggest hardware supplier on the internet; they know what they are doing.

My advice is to either buy a pair, or at least get ideas from what they offer.

Onboard Video off, but Nvidia video card Won't show up?

I have a AOpen Mainboard with built in video. I am running Windows ME. The PC is a backup unless something happens. When I start it the onboard video card makes the screen flicker (verical scan rate to low, but dont have a higher setting) .

I go into the BIOS and disable the On-board video, restart and the Nvidia Video card works for the startup, byt once it kicks over to my desktop, the screen goes black and wont come back on. Why is it doing this????|||Try booting up in safe mode, tehn check the refresh/scan rate and resolution. You may have set the card up to something the monitor can't support. Right click on teh desktopm and properties and settings and advanced and monitor and check the box that says "hide modes this monitor can't display).

You also need to make sure all the drivers are installed correctly.

What video card should i buy?

I just got a brand new computer. It works fine all except the fact that the performance rate for the game graphics is 3.5 which is pretty bad. I tried playing minecraft and it was lagging a lot. There was two video cards i was looking at, the Galaxy GeForce GT 520 2GB and the PNY Nvidia GeForce GT 520 1GB (Bestbuy.com) Which would be better? they are both PCI Express and GDDR3 but does the GB matter? So i am wondering which will boost my performance rating more? or will they do about the same? Thanks!!|||If you are planning to play games on 2 monitors simultaneously (dual monitors) then get the 2 GB but if not then the 1GB would be enough. Basically they have the same performance.

Would this video card XFX GeForce GTX 260 Video Card - 896MB DDR3 work well with my power supply?

My power supply is a Thermaltake Purepower 500w power supply

the system requirements for the card are 500W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 36A or more

im not sure what that means but i hope it will work|||Yrah, you should be fine. Just do not add miscelaneous things like another optical drive or hdd. the PCIexpress compinant power supply is like the one below in the link. It just needs another power plug that conects to the video card exclusively. See PCI-E connector. Only one is needed but since most mlb's support dual video cards most poer supply'a hve two PCI-E power connectors. Good luck .|||You are very borderline. I would not recommend it. It all depends on how many fans you have, hard drives, cd-roms, etc. For the GTX 260 I would like to see atleast a 40A rail and 650w power supply to be comfortable. You can try it but, like I said may have problems.

Compatible Video card for an HP Pavilion?

I been using Radeon X1300/X1550 Series and it has not been doing the trick for playing games on Windows 7. I have a 22" wide screen LCD which is using the DVI input connection capability. When I look at the rating that my graphics card gets from Windows, it is 2.6 and 3.3. for gaming graphics. Also, when I play any games, the video lags to the point that it feels that I am playing on hard when it is on easy.

I wanted to update my video card but I am not sure what kind of card would be able to handle the performance that my computer needs and what I want. I am looking for a graphics card that ranges around $100-$200 and will make the performance of gaming and watching videos without the lagging. Also, I want it to be ATI graphics card since my CPU is made by ADM. To help you out, I am going to give you my computer details:

- HP Pavilion a6123w (search HP website for more info.)

-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30GHz

- 4.00 GB installed memory (3.50 GB usable) DRAM

- 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS

- Display adapter Radeon X1300/X1500

- PCI standard motherboard

- 500GB Samsung internal HDD

- 1TB Maxtor external HDD

That's pretty much all of the details that I could think of mentioning and if there is anything else that you need, just ask. Please help me find a compatible ATI Graphics Card and thanks in advance.|||http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/…

This is one that will meet your specification and if I could make a suggestion upgrade to the 64bit version of Windows so you can take advantage of all your installed ram because as it is you are only using 3.5 gigs of your total.

Also if you haven't done so already I would disable your on board graphics chip from the bios which may be using up some of your system memory.

Hope that helps and happy gaming oh and for future reference please mention what games you intend to be playing because it makes it easier to know what you might need and where you are at.

I need help, better video card or better processor?

for gaming, I want to future proof for at least 2-3 years a desktop, and I'm in the final momments, what should I get, the radeon 6950 2gb with i7 2600k or the radeon 6970 with the i5 2500k? I think eventually hyper threading will be used by games, but the video card would run more smoothly and is rated as one of the best for gaming... so I need some professional advice. Thanks!|||I7 an 6950 bt power is nw da prob even wit i5 unless u gt enough|||if you are sure that you want ati, then you should get the 6950, because if you look it up, they have ways to unlock it to be a 6970. but the two processors are about the same anyway, they both overclock extremely well and your not going to get much more power out of the i7, at least not 100 dollars worth. i would get the i5 and the 6950 (if i liked ati) but they also have nvidia cards too that are way better IMO. If you can overclock it, you can make the i5 just as good or even better than the i7 and the unlocking of the 6950 makes it the obvious money saver.|||Get the i5. It's plenty fast and most games won't use more than two cores now anyway. Games don't always lend themselves well to massive multithreading as there's only so much you can spin off to another core with any real benefit, so I wouldn't worry too much. It also overclocks like crazy if ever it becomes a bottleneck.|||no such thing as future proof with computer hardware

no telling what will happen in 2-3 years

I want to upgrade my pc video card to ati radeon hd 2400, will it be able to work with my asus p5vd2-vm?

If yes, what power supply rating will I use. Currently I have a 400W generic power supply, pentium D 2.66 Ghz processor and ati radeon X1050. When I am playing games, sometimes my pc automatically turns off.|||Yes, it'll work in the pci-e x16 slot that the X1050 is in.

The HD 2400 is a very low power card, it has a max power draw of 25W. It'll easily work with your 400W power supply, generic or not.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?…

It's not much of an upgrade over the X1050, you could do better with that power supply. Does it need to be a low profile card? Does it have to be an ATI card? A much better card than the 2400 would be the geforce 9400GT low profile or radeon HD 4650 low profile that will also work with that power supply. The 4650 is the better card.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?…

9400GT low profile

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

HD 4650 low profile

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

Both cards draw 50W or less and WILL work with the psu (power supply unit) you have.

If you're not restricted to using only low profile cards, you can use the 9500GT which also uses 50W, but isn't as good as the 4650. Both the 9500 and 4650 are available as full size cards.

HD 4650

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…|||you need a new power supply as of right now anyways. 600-700 should be fine even when you up grade your video card. if the HD card is PCI express then your mobo should support it. ( I googled your mobo and I see it will)

Which video card would fit my PC?

The computer I currently have has a not that great video card (Nvidia GeForce 9500GS). Here are the exact specs on my PC right now!

Which of the following would I be able to upgrade to? and if there is more than one which would be the best upgrade of them all? PS. This card is for gaming WoW to be specific I would like to run the game at max settings at 1680x1050 at a smooth rate of 45FPS+

Also, these cards don't have a specified wattage required. I only have a 300W power supply, would any of these work? Thank you so much for taking the time and going over my question!|||Any of those cards would work with your setup. They are all pci-e x16 cards which is what your motherboard supports

For your power supply I would recommend upgrading that to probably a 500W or higher. All of those cards you posted are very power hungry and they don't cost much either.

If you are intent on buying one of those cards, I would recommend http://www.b-com.ca/product.php?productid=228467&page=1 as being the best one.

However, all of those cards are fairly expensive and in my personal opinion a lot more power than you really need. WoW is not a very graphic intense game compared to a lot of newer games. That being said, a top of the line graphics card is not needed to play WoW. I have played WoW on my desktop with max settings on a Radeon HD 4670 and it ran beautifully.

Also I would recommend looking at http://www.newegg.com/ and their cards. It has been my experience that newegg has the cheapest prices. I would recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102855 as the card you get. I own this exact card and it has never been unable to play a game that I threw at it, plus it is a fairly cheap card.|||number 3 seems to be your best option for your computer. It will run WoW on full settings at around over 50fps. Though you will probably get over 60fps.

You will need a more powerful powersupply though. At least a 400 watt one. With this option, you can go with a cheaper PSU than with the other options.

I checked your first link, (#1) and there is no way you can run that on your current power supply, and you may have issues fitting it in your case.

#2 might fit, but need a better power supply.|||Hate to say it, but the 5750 and such cards do need a better power supply, usually a 450W supply. The issue is the external power connector for the video card (6 pin). Your 300W supply may not have it...

The 5670 card recommends a 400W supply, still an issue.

The GTS250, same issue... GTS450, you need a 500W supply.

All the cards you are looking at are good mid range video cards, good for gaming in general. You will have to upgrade the 300W supply is you plan on any serious video card updates anyway...

Best video card for this computer?

In terms of value/performance;

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2 GHz...rated at 4?)

3 GB memory

Vista Home, I believe

It uses a PCIe x16 (I don't think it is 2.0)

I know it isn't a top end computer but I'm hoping it would be able to run some newer games at the lowest settings, or maybe even just older games like CS:Source and WoW on okay settings.

Just don't want to waste extra money on a video card that is too good for the processor/etc. Thanks.|||It's not too bad. The nVidia 9600 GT or one of the ATi Radeon 4700/4800 series cards would do.

If you're really paranoid about high power video cards, just go with an nVidia 8800 GT or another 8000 GT series.|||If your motherboard uses an ati series 7 or later chipset, than most ati pci-e cards will use what is called hypermemory, which means it will have more memory than what the card itself is rated at. eg: my radeon hd 3450 says 512mb on the box, but in my compaq presario sr1711nx ati chipset motherboard it has 1024mb. The model of your computer can be used to look up the model of your motherboard.

What is the best video card to use with an AMD Phenom x4 9950 Black Edition processor?

Is it ok to run a video card (geforce 9800gtx) a couple amps short?

in the description it suggests a 12v current rating of 26 amps or more, but the psu i plan to get is only rated at 24, will it still work properly?|||The suggested current rating generally assumes a quad-core CPU, two hard drives, and makes worst-case assumptions about things like how much power your motherboard draws. If you have a low-end motherboard, dual-core CPU, aren't overclocking, and only have one hard drive and one CD/DVD drive, you'll probably be way under 26A.

However, by modern standards, a 12V 24A supply is really pathetic. You'll probably significantly reduce the life of your power supply because you will be so close to its maximum load.

Is it a high-quality major brand power supply? Those can usually take their full rated load 24 hours a day for years. But cheapo off-brand power supplies often can't even really supply their rated load continuously. (They may test in a 68 degree room for an hour, for example. Then when your room hits 76 degrees, ...)|||It may damage the power supply, it is going to drag the machine's 12v line down a bit. For what they cost get a new supply.

Do you guys think this video card is ok for my PC? ?

My computer : P4 CPU 2.80 GHz , 4 gigs of ram, but really only 3327 mb of ram actually used. Windows Vista Home basic.

I dont really want to upgrade my computer yet, cause all i use it for is to play World of Warcraft. and Currently i have a Nvidia Geforce 6800 256mb (ddr1) i believe, but some reason i have to turn all my settings on LOW. and still only get about 10-20 FPS Mostly in the lower numbers. I saw this video card right here and everybody says its the best agp card. Would this video card be able to run settings atleast (MEDIUM) ?

What do you guys think?|||It is indeed the best AGP card.

Only your CPU will bottleneck it, so you can't get the most out of it.

Also check if your PSU has enough power, because the video card needs much.|||Newegg has same card

Rate this video card nvidia 7300 gt 7300 pci-e?

Hey guys theres a store near that is selling the video card for 50 dollars is it a good one? Nvidia ge force 7300 512 mb ddr2 7300 PCI - e. Video card thank you guys so much|||it's a good budget card but will not play graphically intensive games that well. find out if you can get the ddr3 version as you only need to add a few more bucks for it.|||I have this card, and I haven't had any problems yet. Battlefield 1942 and COD4:Modern Warfare run great at good resolutions. For more graphic intensive games, you may want to up the series. Stick with Nvidia though; ATI's drivers are sorry.

Which should I upgrade first: my RAM or my video card?

I have an HP Media Center 7160n, one year old, 1 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz Pentium D w/Intel 128MB onboard video.

Just installed Flight Simulator X and I've got a noticeable drop in frame rate; I have to dial the settings way down to get a decent frame rate, so I guess it's time to do an upgrade. I was thinking about upgrading my memory to 2GB and getting a better video card (PCI Express), but I don't have the financial resources right now to do both at the same time. So if were to do one of the two, which should I do first? And if I should get a better card, what should I look for?

I'm a soft-core gamer (I also play SimCity 4 and The Sims 2) and a digital photography/video hobbyist (I use Photoshop and Premiere Elements a lot).

Thanks in advance for your help!|||Your RAM is fine, the minimum required by the game is 256 MB, so you're fine there. I'd say go with a better video card, Intels arn't that great for gaming especially if the game is all 3D based and especially if its on-board video. Since you have a Pentium D your motherboard will probably have a PCI Express slot. Look at your user manual to make sure, that way you don't buy the wrong card with the wrong interface. I personally like ATI card. The X series are good, X300 or higher.|||Get a new video card...your RAM is perfect for the moment. Your low frame rates are caused by the graphics's card.|||The gfx card definitely. 1GB of RAM isn't too bad for running anything, certainly all my games run fine with 1GB of RAM, but an onboard Intel gfx card is terrible and, to be honest, I'm surprised you can run games at all with something like that. If you read this review of your machine it basically says as much, that card simply isn't designed for any kind of gaming:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,184…|||Do away with the onboard video, and use a agp graphics card. 1 G should be plenty of RAM if it runs at the MB's max BUS. Best bet is to check the bus on your board then check the RAM and make sure that is what you need. I ran slower than I needed to untill I realized my board supported faster RAM. I'd look atthe ATI cards since that seems to be the standard graphics card these days.|||Be sure that you should change your graphics adapter as on board ones do not have sufficient performance to survive heavy graphic processing.

I strongly suggest you to buy MSI graphic cards as they are really fantastic.

Visit MSI website to check their latest products.

If not found MSI in market, then choose Albatron or Sparkle brands as they are great too.

Make sure that you have PCI-Express or AGP slot and buy the appropriate card.|||video card|||There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. I need some help with my new ATI Sapphire HD Radeon 6790 video card?

Okay, so a few days ago, i felt that it was time to upgrade from my old HD Radeon 3450 card,

so i bought the HD Radeon 6790 and a sufficient power supply ( Corsair 600w ), and my friend installed it into my computer for me with ease.

Using a DVI cable, i connected my monitor with my new video card.

Currently, i can see things on my screen, but the video card is not really in effect right now.

In the Windows performance rating, it received a 1.0 rating for both categories relating to categories.

I have reason to believe that my card is not being recognized by my computer.

as a display adapter, it is being named, "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter"

I attempted to download and install the driver for the card multiple times from the official AMD website, with no success.

I also downloaded the latest drivers for my BIOS and my chipset, but it made no difference.

Here are my specs for my computer:

Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Intel core 2 quad Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz 2.34Ghz

6gigs of RAM

Currently, my CD-ROM is not usable because i had to remove the longer cable connecting it to the hard drive so that my video card could reach my hard drive, otherwise i would use my installation disk that my card came with

next week i should be able to get another cable and get the CD ROM working again, but until then, anyone have any ideas as to what may solve my dilemma? :/

thanks :)|||lol. doesnt matter if u update mobo drivers.. thast only for ethernet, cpu, and stuff liek that.

what u want is a graphics driver. so in your case you want catalyst control center. this shouldve came with ur graphics card if u bought it in a box, if not go to their webiste, and it shoudl work|||My computer did this at first as well, it recognized the onboard video instead of the video card so it gave it a 1.0 rating.

However to fix this, go to BIOS screen, it will tell you how when you enter the Boot menu, and than just find Anything about Video or graphics because its different on every motherboard, so just change it to "Pci-e" instead of "PCI" or onboard graphics. This might solve your dillema.

Otherwise wait for the CD-rom|||Did you uninstall the previous drivers via Add-Remove Programs? (or whatever it's called in Win7, that's what it's called in XP)

About the HDD cable thing - you could just unmount your hard drive and put it on the ground next to your PC temporarily.

Monitor/Video Card Problem - Detailed Inside?

Ok so out of nowhere my monitor has these blue and red lines blinking all over the place. If I try to put the refresh rate at 60 hz where its supposed to be, it goes ape-**** crazy and I cant even read anything on the monitor because its going nuts. But, this problem is quite weird.

I have an on-board video card, and my PCI-E video card. I also have two monitors.

The current HD monitor has the problem with the PCI-e video card, but the other monitor works perfect.

The HD monitor though, works perfectly with the on-board video card.

So I have no idea if it is a monitor problem or a video card problem, since they both work under different conditions. The HD monitor works with the on-board video perfectly, while the non-hd monitor works perfectly with the PCI-E video card.

the HD monitor will not work in 1080p at all. the screen goes crazy when I try. I have to keep it at a low refresh rate and resolution to do anything on it.

Odd. I know. Any help would be a great service.

Btw. I already tried separate drivers for the PCI-E card. I also redid my whole OS totally. So thats not it either. I'm lost. Which doesnt happen very often, lol.|||they are not compatable with each other, im guessing it is the gpu that is messing it up, if the hd monitor works, and you connect it to gpu and it is messed up, its the gpu, but are you using a hdmi cable when connecting to gpu, maybe the monitors hdmi port is messed up or the gpu hdmi is messed up|||You may have already tried these steps but this is what we would try first concerning the PCI-e card:

- Check the cable connection is pushed in all the way into monitor and card

- If you have another video cable try it

- Open up your desktop top and re-seat the card, ie, unscrew it pull it out and push it back in, screw in

- Move the card to a spare slot if you have one and try that

- Put the card in another desktop and try it - if it fails here you can be pretty sure the card itself is failing

Good luck

Rate this video card please?

what do you guys think about this video card for my motherboard? I have a 1 x PCI express x16 slot for discrete graphics cards.

http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3478852&CatId=1558|||It's fine for everyday use like web browsing, e-mail, watching movies etc but it's too slow for gaming. It's slower than a 9400GT, which is slower than a 9500GT (and that's the low-end of cards for casual gaming)

By spending $20 more for a 9500GT or Radeon 4650, you get much better performance. But if you're not playing any newer games, it's fine.|||depend on what you wanna do with it, I own a ATI 9550 and for gaming it sucks, but for what I use it gets the job get quite well (I don't play, only surf the web and listen to music)|||that will run fine on your motherboard...its passively cooled, depending on what your doing with it you may need a card with a fan.....just a suggestion....

if you are just using for normal everyday stuff and not high intensity gaming the card will be fine.......

Good Video card For Dell Dimension 4700c?

Is it possible to get a laptop retro fitted with a good video card / GPU?

One that will enable it to handle good quality games at a good frame rate.

( I don't want to have to spend £1500 ($2200) on an Alienware gaming laptop )|||This ranges from easy (if your laptop comes with a removeable mobile PCIE chip) to extremely difficult if it's soldered on. I wouldn't suggest it. Laptops are highly efficient because they're designed a certain way. If you change it, not only would you lose your warranty, you could break it. Then your $1000 laptop will turn into $2000 very quickly.

If you want to game on a laptop, get the Alienware. If you don't want to spend that money, you won't get awesome graphics.

Hey you can visit below link you can find more options here :

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?u…|||Depends upon your budget and other system components and what resolution you play games at. On a budget I'd say Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT or an ATi Radeon 5670 or on a slightly higher budget a Nvidia GTX 460 or ATi 5770/5830. Any of those are great cards amd will certainly bring a great boost in performance.|||What motherboard do you have? (Or, if it's a name brand computer, what's the brand and model?) Also, what power supply do you have?

And do you have some specific budget it mind? Do you play games other than WoW?|||Anything Nvidia unless you have an AMD then stick to ATI, just go up with the numbers.

Is this a good power supply unit for my new video card?

I recently bought a video card, which is the Genuine GeForce 9800 GT 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, HDTV, VGA Support. Now I need a new power supply to run my card. Requirements for this card:

# Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.

(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amp Amps.)

# Minimum 450 Watt for SLI mode system.

# An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector

I found a power supply called Logisys 575W 20+4-Pin Dual Fan SLI Ready/ATX Power Supply - PS575XBK online for a cheap price and I am wondering if this power supply meets the requirements of my new video card.

Here's the specification for this power supply:

THANKS!!!|||It's more than enough to power your 9800GT. The requirements is a 26Amps 12volt rail. The PSU you're buying has 40Amps.|||it appears to meet the requirements, but I'd be very wary of any cheap power supply. most of them are junk. personally, I would avoid anything that costs less than $50 or so. a cheap power supply might work, but you're really rolling the dice with one. there's a good chance it will blow out and fry something. reputable brands include bfg, corsair, antec, enermax, cooler master, silverstone, seasonic, thermaltake, fsp, ocz, sparkle, PC Power & Cooling, and in win. I've probably left out some, but that's a pretty big list. if you don't mind dealing with rebates this one is pretty good according to anandtech http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…|||yes a 575watts is enough for your gpu coz mine is only 550 watts and im running an gtx 260.... but if your going for 3 sli soon just go for 1000watts

New video card? New processor? Help please!?

So. I've recently discovered the entertainment potential of PC gaming. I've downloaded just about every console emulator out there, and i just recently bought halo 2 for PC. However, the more complex emulators don''t run at full speed. My PS2 emulator won't run above 80% except on small maps, and my GameCube emulator won't run above 50% except on small maps. Also, my halo 2 frame rate is sub-par, even at the lowest resolution. Playable, but still not where i want it to be. To the point, i need to know whether it's my video card or my processor i need to replace. Or maybe even something else.

I'm new to computer hardware, so i have no idea where to start. My "windows experience index" base score is 3.3, and it says its based off of the lowest subscore. That subscore comes from my gaming graphics and graphics, so theyre both a 3.3. My processor's rating is a 4.4. I'm not sure if this information is relevant, but oh well.

Im pretty sure the name of my video card is the "Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Thats what it says under both name and chip type of the display tab on the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Im pretty sure my processor is a "Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz 2.19GHz."

Sorry i typed so much. Im not sure what else to include. My pc codel is a Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC, with 2GB ram. I have 64-bit windows 7.

So should i get a new video card, or a new processor? Or something else? someone please help. Thanks!|||where do we start. well the main part you need to consider is your motherboard and whether it will be capable of handling high spec hardware. dont automatically assume you need to upgrade parts especially in laptops as they are very touchy when it comes to upgrading and can become quite expensive. my best advice to you is weigh up the costs of what new hardware will cost you such as the new graphics card and cpu for your laptop and to be honest, i think you'll be better off leaving your laptop for browsing, mobility and basic stuff because really, that was their intention when they were made. if you are really serious about your gaming, then i suggest looking to buy a desktop. they are much easier to upgrade as you can simply install parts yourself and the parts are much cheaper. you can build yourself a great system for under $1000. if you really want to stick to laptops then it is essential you read the minimum requirements before buying a game, especially the lastest ones as your computer might not be able to support it. or you can buy a top of range gaming laptop such as the toshiba qosmio or a dell alienware. hope that helps.

so yeh think very carefully before upgrading parts on the laptop. my opinion, its not worth it. get a desktop.|||Unlike Desktop PC's laptops are generally too hard to upgrade and some are just impossible.About the only thing you can upgrade is memory and HDD and that wont make any difference given the cpu and graphics that laptop has now

When i install a new video card my pc doesn't boot! Power supply problem?

When i install my new video card (from a weaksauce asus geforce 6200 agp to a bfg geforce 6600 oc gt agp) my computer has all of the fans running very fast and the hard drive light is orange but it is not doing anything ( because i could hear it doing nothing) and it just does not boot . It could be my power supply because the card requires 350 watts and mine supports 600 watts but the card also requires a 18a rating and i dont know if mine supports it. ( and yes i properly removed the old drivers and everything so its not that)

(when i go back to my geforce 6200 it works fine)

What is the problem?

System specs: 2.08 ghz amd athlon processor

1.5 gb of RAM

120 gb hard drive

windows xp home

i dont really know what motherboard it is but it is an asus motherboard with 3 pci slots and one agp 8x slot( yes it does have onboard graphics but as i said earlier i uninstalled them a long time ago and i have been using a geforce 6200|||The problem is most likely you're not giving your new video card enough power. 600 watts is pretty beefy, but if you don't have a dedicated rail for your video card, your card may not be getting enough power because it's having to "share" the power coming from your PSU with all the other components in your computer(e.g., hard drives, CD/DVD drives, etc.).

Alternatively, it could just be that for whatever reason, the new card is not compatible with your motherboard. Go to your motherboard's website, and see if you can find any documentation of what is compatible with it. If you have an ASUS, you should be able to ascertain what model it is by looking at the board, and finding the model number which is usually printed right on the top somewhere.

Good luck! :o)|||seems to me that you have enough power going to the card. don't worry about the 18a rating your power supply isn't the problem. i know that you uninstalled the on board video drivers but that doesn't mean that the integrated video is disabled. you need to disable it in the BIOS. you enter the BIOS by pressing DEL (usually) . then go through all the options and look for something that says primary display and change it to AGP. if this doesn't work then the card could be DOA. just return it and make them send you another one. and you should install the new video card drivers first before physically installing it chances are your motherboard isn't reading it.|||email i can help you jcottini90@yahoo.com

What External Video Card is for me?

i need an External video card. my Laptop is a Pavilion dv9000 2 gb ram/NVIDIA Geforce 7600 and i need better nad was told i can only get an external video card. I play games allot so i need something with good Frame-Rate adn can run games at high quality. Some games i play are CSS(Counter Strike Source) (Sniper Ghost Warrior) Ext i have a 90$ Budget so blow my mind.|||So far there is no external graphic cards for laptops at present. You may expect them in 2nd Qtr of 2011.|||External video cards don't work for gaming. They work well to add additional low-performance video ports to control things like projectors. And the medium-performance (external PCI-Express) ones start at around $400.

OS: windows XP 32bit

New Video Card: Nvidia Geforce250(1024MB Ram)

RAM: 3GB(2GB For Applications)

Processor:AMD 64 X2 Dual core at 2.19GHz|||Editing and compiling HD video has more to do with your CPU than your graphics adapter.

A 2.19GHz X2 is an older, slower CPU. If you want faster, then get a faster CPU.

8800GT Video Card Comparison?

I was going to buy a 550ti video card to replace my old 8800Gt which is broken. I was trying to compare and see if the new card would be better in general. I found this comparison that says "The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB will be a bit (more or less 17%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti." How can a 5 year old card be better than a card released recently? Is this texel rate and filtering something I would notice in videos or games? Just curious as to what it really means.

Thanks

http://www.hwcompare.com/9815/geforce-88…|||You've just provided a perfect example of why hwcompare.com isn't worth bothering with.

Many people don't realize that the results from HWcompare don't reflect any real-world testing of graphics cards. Their numbers are purely THEORETICAL, it says so right on the page!!!

There are many different specs for graphics cards- the memory interface size, the type of memory, the core and memory clock speeds, the number of stream processing units- but all of those specs have less impact upon performance than the specific GPU a card is based upon! It's impossible to accurately evaluate cards by just looking at the numerical specs, because the GPU models aren't numerical values. Same thing with CPUs- a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo E4600 wipes the floor with a single-core 3.6Ghz Pentium 4- the Core 2 Duo internal architecture is much more advanced and efficient, picking the older CPU because it's running at 3.6Ghz would be silly.

Here's the direct comparison:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/6…

With graphics card numerical specs, sometimes a higher value in one area is offset by a lower value in another. For example the GeForce 9800GT is a 256-bit GDDR3 card. Meanwhile the Radeon HD 4770 is a 128-bit card. You'd think with half the memory bandwidth it would be slower, but it's faster. That's because the 4770 uses GDDR5 memory, and it turns out that a smaller pipeline to faster GDDR5 memory worked just as well as the bigger pipeline to slower GDDR3 memory. So the 4770 beats the 9800GT but it doesn't beat the GTS 250 (also a 256-bit GDDR3 card) because that one has a more powerful GPU.

What HWCompare does is like comparing automobiles based upon manufacturer's brochures, without ever taking them out on the track! They're just guessing based upon differences in particular technical subsystems, often without accounting for technological advances over different generations. A complete waste of time.

The results from videocardbenchmark.net are somewhat better- that shows how various cards did on benchmark tests. Now those results are sometimes misleading because the tests often favor newer generation cards over older ones. Passmark scores show you which cards ran the test suite software best, not which cards actually performed best in game titles like Crysis, Call of Duty, Battlefield Bad Company 2. What really counts is which cards get higher fps in Age of Conan running at 1600x900 or 1280x1024 at various detail settings, not which cards were fastest at drawing the same polygon over & over in test A, or had the highest memory throughput in test B. But even those results are better than HWcompare, because you're at least seeing some actual results, even if the tests aren't the ones you're interested in.

The best source for performance data is card reviews. Check sites like Anandtech, Hot Hardware, Tom's Hardware, Techspot, Guru3D... those show how cards perform at different resolutions and detail settings in actual game titles. They also typically compared that performance to competing cards in the same price bracket, or earlier models. They also provide power consumption information and some context of why different models were introduced.

For reference, you can see the GeForce 9800GT (the updated 8800GT) in the chart above. It's slightly better than the Radeon HD 5670. The very top card on that chart (Radeon HD 5750) is approximately equal to the GTS 450. That's below the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which competes with the Radeon HD 5770.

Always look for real reviews- those tell the story.|||The 550 TI was meant to be a new but low performance video card for its times, the 8800 GT is still a very good graphics card if you compare it to current cards.

In the end though, 550 TI is a bad video card, your better off not upgrading or get a 460 gtx which should be the same money as a 550 TI but better performance.|||That's a load of crap. The GTX 550 Ti will stomp an 8800GT in every possible way.

Sheff is an idiot. The 8800GT gets outrun by a Radeon 6670. The GTX 550 Ti easily spanks them both. The 8800GT is a fairly low end card these days.

C-Man nailed it, albeit a bit wordy. Comparing raw hardware specs on video cards means NOTHING. Benchmarks are everything. If you want to know how a video card actually performs, look at tests that show how it actually performs.

Can i plug in pci-express video card 2.0 into pci-express 16x slot?

and what would you suggest for me to buy for a motherboard that has only pci express 16x(i think its for pci-express 1.1)? video card that is a pci express 2.0 or a pci-express 1.1?

because somebody said that if i put pci-express 2.0 video card on a pci-express 16x slot, i will not gonna get the full capability of the pci-express 2.0 video card.

so if im right. if i buy a video card that is:

512mb

geforce 9400

128bit rate

pci-express 2.0 support.

and put in a pci-express 16x slot, these specs will gonna be reduce??? something like into:

256mb

geforce 4700

64bit

. and if i buy a video card that is in the same specs but in pci-express 1.1, and put it in the pci-express 16x, i will gonna get the full capability of these video carD. hehehe. am i right???

somebdy please answer, im planning to buy video card and i really need sme advice. i wanna play crisis.

my pc specs:

mother board: jetway 945gcm2s-a2-6h

processor: intel dual core 1.8ghrz

ram: 2.5gb

graphics: 224mb(shared and i have no video card yet)

i cannot run some games because i don't have video card. please help..

and also would u choose me a video card for this pc specs?

really need some help, thanks!|||You're getting confused on specs. PCI-express x16 is a speed, which is the highest speed right now. PCI-express 1.1 and PCI-express 2.0 are standards for board utilization. 1.1 means that only one slot can run at x16. The rest will be downclocked to 8x or 4x or whatever. PCI-X 2.0 means that two slots can run at full x16.

Your specs don't get reduced like that. Your 9400GT would work just fine, just so long as you weren't trying to pair it with something else.

If you're only using one card, the PCI 1.1 or 2.0 are irrelevant, unless you plan on doing SLI or Crossfire in the future.

(EDIT)

I'd start with either the HD4650, HD4670, HD4830 or an nVidia alternative would be the 9400 or 9500. Anything more would be overkill. Just run your resolution at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (if your screen can handle it)
